MSI RTX 3060 Ti gaming X TRIO review

Nvidia’s REwritten RTX 3060 Ti is kind of strong and silent.
While we all wish we could buy the Nvidia RTX 3090 or AMD RX 6900 XT, we rank and focus PC gamers more interested in more affordable and world-appropriate options such as the RTX 3060 Ti. We tested the Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition card at PCG and were impressed by the increase in performance. system and its general characteristics.

However, there is always room for improvement and we expect that from premium partner cards such as the MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio card that we have here. It’s an absolute monster of a card. Is it worth more than the entry-level card?

MSI RTX 3060 TI GAMING X TRIO REVIEW

The RTX 3060 Ti shares a lot in common with the Nvidia RTX 3070. It uses a shortened version of the GA104 GPU with 4,864 cores activated compared to the 5,888 of the RTX 3070. Both share 8GB of 14Gbps of memory and of course, you get all the features of the Ampere including improved second-generation ray tracking support, DLSS, and more. Check out our launch article for a closer look at the features and technologies of the RTX 30-series architecture.

Switching to the MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio – said to be 10 times faster – the first thing that becomes clear is its sheer size. It becomes a pretty good murder weapon (that’s where you first think of ?! – Ed.).

The Tri Frozr cooler is like the cooler used to cool the RTX 3080 Gaming X version with a much higher TDP, so we know it’s much less likely to cool this less demanding GA104 GPU. This is a three-slot card that measures 323mm x 140mm x 56mm, so you need to make sure it fits into your case. You will have a neat RGB light bar along the edge of the card, along with a bright MSI logo and another strip running on the fan visors. It’s a nice card. At $489, it’s also as pretty big step up from the Founders Edition version, and the reference card is cheaper, but it doesn’t outperform other top-level cards like Asus’s Strix or Aorus and Gigabyte respectively.

However, the MSI RTX 3060 Ti has a surprisingly large and sparse PCB with an 8-phase VRM. There’s really no need for VRM Lightning-Esque with this fourth-tier Ampere GPU. It has an increased clock of 1,830MHz but the official clocks are not relevant unless you are tapping with it or have a shell with poor airflow. TDP’s card has been increased to 240W quite high compared to 200W of RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition. The proprietary 12-legged power connector you’ll find on Nvidia-made cards is skipped to replace it with a pair of standard 8-legged PCIe connectors.

This can be a good thing for the obsessive cable managers out there who don’t like the central location of the 12-legged connector. Cards with typical output sets now include three DisplayPort 1.4a and a single HDMI 2.1 port. USB Type-C has been removed from the Ampere generation, who really need VirtualLink.

However, at the end of the day, it was the most important performance and the RTX 3060 Ti made a big step not only compared to the RTX 2060 but also beat the RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 and supermodels at the time. Actually, only the RTX 2080 Ti is faster among all Turing generation GeForce cards. MSI Gaming X mocks the advertised 1,830MHz clock gain. After running for more than 10 minutes on full load, the card stabilizes at a steady increase in pulse between 1,930 and 1,970MHz, albeit on an open test tape.

MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio Benchmark
MSI’s Gaming X Trio options are often the quietest graphics card models you can buy. Taste RTX 3060 Ti continues that trend. It is simply impossible to hear the sound of other fans and AIO pumps in our testing system and it manages this low noise level without affecting performance. We know that this cooler can easily overpower the much hotter RTX 3080 GPU, so when it is tasked with cooling the GA104 GPU, which requires less energy than 100W, well, it is actually a walk in the park. If silence is on your priority list, you’ll hardly be able to do better.

A rapid over overs to a steady increase in pulses between 2,020 and 2,050MHz. That’s not bad, but with the way modern GPUs increase efficiency within their energy budgets, a performance increase of about 5% doesn’t seem really worth it. We can also achieve 2,000MHz on memory easily (or up to 16Gbps compared to the default 14Gbps). More likely to happen if you spend time with it, although how that will really fit in terms of additional performance.

If you play games at 1440p and you are watching a card to play at high settings then RTX 3060 Ti is a great option. Something like Cyberpunk 2077 at maximum settings and 4K resolution will far exceed it, but then exceed many cards on the market. But at least you can play with ray detection and turn on DLSS. These are things that are not currently available to AMD users.

When you look at a beautiful game like Cyberpunk 2077, you wouldn’t think it’s a ‘killer app’ that pushes the tracking ray over a threshold to the point where it will actually become the core PC graphics technology. Ray tracking is more than just an exciting bonus technology. Adoption rates will only increase from here. Take a look at what AMD and the new consoles look like with it when it’s available.

Now that the comment section is gone, go back to the MSI Gaming X Trio. It’s much larger cooler means that the temperature and noise temperature are significantly improved compared to the entry-level RTX 3060 Ti card, but then it also costs an additional $70 or more. It is also necessary to consider the increased power consumption of 40W. Whether the additional amount is worth it is up to you. In this position on the market, this particular price category is not so strong compared to the hundreds of additional dollars for the premium RTX 3080 but if you have a tight budget, it can make a big difference.

There is also a conundrum about the available. Nvidia’s RTX 30 series, and to a greater extent AMD’s RX 6000 series cards, are experiencing shortages or nonexistent. It is unacceptable to wait for months for a GPU. So the card you bought may be reduced to rows in a snap that you happen to be on the page.

However, it will not last forever and the MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X is a great card, luxurious, and geared towards users who value smooth operation and high-end mid-range performance. If you want a nice RGB range on top of the card that leans towards low noise before temperatures a few degrees then the MSI Gaming X Trio is the one you’ll want to consider. You know, when you have many options …
