Best CPUs for gaming in 2020

Start your device with the best CPU for gaming. More cores, more watches, more important things.

With the best CPU for gaming in your system, the expensive new graphics card you’ve been eyeing will be able to work to the best of its ability. Especially as we enter a new era of affordable 4K games. The best CPU is also a worthy investment for any creative, editing, or streaming work you might enjoy doing with your PC, and means you won’t need a separate machine to handle streaming yourself. With more cores than ever before, you don’t need to worry about multitasking pushing your gaming PC to the limit anymore.

The best CPU for gaming in 2020

In case you missed it, there was a big change in CPU space: AMD is currently dominated. It has won praise for several years now with its Ryzen processor but has always been retained by Intel’s great gaming power. That no longer happens with the release of Zen 3 — AMD is now level and sometimes beats Intel in terms of gaming. With the other possibilities that AMD offers, it means that AMD is simply a better option right now, as long as the price is right. It’s a little odd that Intel tries to stay steady at some price by becoming a better value option.

However, there is a slight fly in the CPU ointment here, and that is the inventory level. Just as Nvidia’s graphics card sold out in seconds, so did AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series processor. They are great chips, but actually buying any of them right now is a task for itself. That doesn’t stop them from becoming the best chips out there, but that means if you’re looking to upgrade, you’ll need a little more patience.

Once you have figured out what kind of CPU you want to create a machine, the next question is which motherboard you should choose. The new Ryzen 5000 chips still use the old AM4 socket and are compatible with the X570, B550, and A520 motherboards (with B450 and X470 motherboard support later launched). Intel’s latest Comet Lake chips use the new LGA1200 socket and we’ll be using cheaper Z490 motherboards or B460 motherboards at this point. Thankfully, our options for the best gaming motherboard are compatible with the CPUs on this list.
